Catalyst December 2007 Welcome to Catalyst
John Pennett Officer-in-Charge, Life Sciences Group Amper, Politziner & Mattia, PC Welcome to our second edition of Catalyst. Our first issue received strong feedback for focusing on the business practices relevant to the industry - not just accounting related topics. We are going to keep that focus, bringing an awareness of accounting topics for sure—but also highlighting business trends and topics that we hope will be of interest to a wider audience. Certainly this year's BIO2007 conference brought a lot of interesting and thought provoking topics.
We also focus on two other major topics of interest to many companies. The first is a discussion of the compliance “transparency laws”—the rules and requirements of advertising pharmaceutical products to the medical community. We have some outstanding subject matter experts discussing the legal, tracking and reporting requirements of this often overlooked and ever-changing topic. Next is a discussion on the new tax rules associated with licensing fees received. As this is a major strategy for many bio-tech companies, the taxability of these payments is a significant source of concern, especially as analyses of net operating losses often yield to the conclusion that there are insufficient losses available to offset large non-recurring taxable income events. We also weave some of the complex accounting rules into this discussion. Dennis Yablonsky, secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development, shares his thoughts on the Keystone State’s efforts to lure and keep high tech businesses and grow the region’s economy. Finally, we provide an update on global product-liability insurance trends thanks to our friends at Hays Company. Our next edition will focus on international issues, including a feature on BioPortUSA, a new organization designed to provide turnkey solutions to foreign life sciences companies seeking to establish U.S.-based operations. Amper Politziner & Mattia is proud to be one of the founding partners in this initiative. Thanks again to our friends at the New Jersey Technology Council for their continued support of this publication. I hope you find it informative and interesting. Please feel free to contact me or a member of the Life Sciences Team at Amper with any comments or suggestions for future articles. |
